The Manuscript Context of Anglo-Saxon Charms Research into charm texts requires close attention to be paid to their manuscript context. By reading charms recorded in seemingly incongruous locations as part of a coherent whole, it is possible to gain a clearer and more accurate By reading charms recorded in seemingly incongruous locations as part of a coherent whole, it is possible to gain a clearer and more accurate understanding of their use, authorship, readership and recording than has been achieved in previous scholarship.
In order to illustrate my point, I will base my paper around a discussion of six closely related theft charms. Firstly, I propose to briefly introduce my methodology and the theft charms themselves. The theft charms consist of discrete, easily recognisable formulas that are transmitted with varying levels of accuracy throughout the tradition.
Examining the movements of these formulas from manuscript to manuscript allows for interesting discussion of transmission; due to time limitations, I will focus on the effect that possible adaptations by clergy and the laity have had on the construction of the charms, by examining one formula in particular.
Secondly, I will introduce the manuscripts in which the charms are found, and discuss the effect that study of the manuscript context has on our understanding of the charms, focusing particularly on the theft charms found in legal manuscripts.
Thirdly, I will move onto discussing some Early Modern transcriptions of these charms, focusing on how and why Early Modern scholars chose to transcribe these particular manuscripts, and thus continue the tradition by recasting it, recording the charms as part of a larger intellectual investigation into Anglo-Saxon text.Exophony is the practice of (normally creative) writing in a language that is not one's mother tongue.
Some exophonic authors may be bilingual or multilingual from their childhood years, even polyglots, while others may write in an acquired language. From Lucian of Samasota in the second century to Aleksandar Hemon in the 21st, the author of The Quiet Twin picks the best 'exophonic' writing.

I haven’t read the book, so I don’t know. SFReader says: Bathrobe lists exophonic authors writing in “non-major” languages, while authors themselves are native speakers of “major” languages. By that definition there are thousands of exophonic writers in other literary languages like Arabic, Classical Chinese, Persian.
